TCM Book Review #2: DRiVE by Daniel Pink

DRiVE

Welcome back to our series of reviews of books related to organizational improvements, operational efficiencies and strategic solutions (TCM)! This month, we will be discussing Drive by Daniel Pink. This book dives into the science of motivation and how understanding what motivates us can lead to better results in our professional and personal lives.

Daniel Pink’s DRIVE is an insightful book into what motivates us.  In business, leaders need to inspire themselves and others to achieve goals and find purpose and meaning.  Pink speaks to the immense power of intrinsic motivators we find deep within ourselves, versus external motivators such as “carrots” and “sticks” which are much less effective and sustainable over time for an engaged workforce.

The ultimate freedom for creative groups is the freedom to experiment with new ideas. Some skeptics insist that innovation is expensive. In the long run, innovation is cheap. Mediocrity is expensive and autonomy can be the antidote.
- Tom Kelley, General Manager IDEO

We often think of providing rewards or punishments as ways to motivate people, however often times these “tools” can have an adverse effect.  Additionally, Pink describes three critical elements of motivation Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose.  Autonomy which I interpret as being empowered to make choices without being overly “micro-managed.”  Mastery he defines as becoming proficient at something, we all want to be good or even great at what we do.  Finally, and perhaps most important is Purpose.

We all want what we do to matter. Finding purpose in what we do adds value to our lives and the lives of others.  If we have meaning in what we do, do it well and can direct ourselves in our efforts we are motivated to achieve great things! Pink reinforces the notion we discussed in our first book review, Start with Why, which is that following our purpose may be the single most important motivator to achieve goals in business and life.

Additional Tips from Daniel Pink:

  1. Set clear goals - Daniel Pink encourages us to set clear goals and to track our progress in order to stay motivated and achieve success.

  2. Focus on the process - Pink reminds us that it is important to focus on the process, not just on the outcome. He encourages us to find joy and satisfaction in the journey, not just the final destination.

  3. Make connections - Pink encourages us to make connections between our goals and our values so that we are more likely to stay motivated and achieve our goals.

  4. Take risks - Pink reminds us to take risks and try new things in order to reach our goals.

  5. Manage energy - Pink advises us to manage our energy levels by getting enough sleep and exercising regularly.

  6. Find your flow - Pink emphasizes the importance of finding our flow – being in the zone – in order to maximize our potential and stay focused on our goals.

Drive is one of the best books I have read to improve my life both personally and professionally, I highly recommend reading it!
